Campaigns MWR supports

The Million Women Rise Coalition supports the following campaigns:

MWR International Women’s Day petition

MWR believes that a national bank holiday in the UK on International Women’s Day celebrating the achievements and contributions of women will strengthen our societies commitment to ending violence towards women. IWD is now an official holiday in Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. Please follow this link and sign the MWR petition

Reclaim the Night

Since 2004 the London Feminist Network has organised the national Reclaim The Night march to say no to rape and male violence and demand justice for survivors. The UK rape conviction rate is still at its lowest ever, just over 5%. The march takes place each November as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women and demands the right to live without the fear or reality of rape and male violence.

16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is an international campaign that was started by the Center for Women's Global Leadership (CWGL) in 1991. The 16 Days runs from November 25, International Day Against Violence Against Women to December 10, International Human Rights Day to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasise that such violence is a violation of human rights. WOMANKIND works internationally to reduce violence against women.

Why Women?

The Why Women? campaign speaks up for women’s organisations, which do great work for women and society as a whole, but are under threat from lack of funding. The Why Women? Campaign is calling on the government to put gender back on the agenda.

End Violence Against Women

EVAW is a coalition representing 7 million individuals and organisations across the UK who believe a world free from the threat and reality of violence against women can and must be created. EVAW is calling for a cross-government strategy, similar to the Scottish approach, on violence against women.

No Recourse to Public Funds

Southall Black Sisters has campaigned relentlessly for the abolition of the no recourse to public funds rule. The rule means that women coming to the UK to join their spouse must remain in the marriage for at least two years before they can apply to stay here permanently and are not entitled to welfare benefits, council housing or other public funds during that time. The ‘two year rule’ traps hundreds of BME women in violent relationships and destitution and allows abusers to remain unaccountable for their actions.

Crisis in Rape Crisis

The Women’s Resource Centre and Rape Crisis (England and Wales) are campaigning for a firm political commitment to providing adequate, sustainable and long-term funding. Rape Crisis centres are closing at an alarming rate because of a lack of funding. In 1984 there were 68 Rape Crisis centres in England and Wales – today there are just 38 centres.

Sign the petition on the Downing Street website to demand proper funding for Rape Crisis centres http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/RapeCrisis/

World March of Women

The World March of Women is an international feminist action movement connecting grass-roots groups and organisations working to eliminate the causes at the root of poverty and violence against women. WMW campaigns against all forms of inequality and discrimination directed at women. In October 2008, the Co-ordinator of MWR, Sabrina Qureshi, attended the WMW conference in Vigo, Spain.

Abortion Rights

Abortion Rights is the national pro-choice campaign to defend and extend women's rights and access to safe, legal abortion. Abortion Rights opposes any attack on the 1967 Abortion Act including any attempt to lower the abortion time limit. The defeat in May 2008 of attempts to begin restricting rights by lowering the abortion time limit was a huge victory for women.

Object Lap Dancing

Object challenges 'Sex Object Culture' - the objectification of women, particularly the normalising of the porn and sex industries, through lad's mags or lap dancing.
Object opposes the harmful attitudes this promotes about women's status and value and about women's - and men's - sexual identity. Stripping the Illusion campaign calls for lap dancing to be licensed, regulated and recognised for what it is.

Justice for Rape Victims

This campaign, led by the Fawcett Society, is calling for the Government to invest in support services without delay and take immediate steps to ensure that real improvements are made in the criminal justice system

Stop the War

The Stop the War Coalition was formed in 2001 and campaigns to stop the war currently declared by the United States and its allies against 'terrorism'. Global war and conflict perpetuates violence against women and children as witnessed in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, the Congo and Sudan.

Demand Change!

Demand Change! is a joint campaign by Eaves and OBJECT which aims to promote an increased understanding of the myths and realities surrounding prostitution and calls for prostitution to be seen and widely understood as a form of violence against women. The Demand Change! Campaign achieved a major victory for women exploited by the sex industry in November 2009, as Clause 14 (formerly 13) of the Policing & Crime Act was passed, putting the rights of exploited women over those of pimps and punters.
