Every year on November 25th, we come together as Million Women Rise, to honour women and girls that have been killed by men, and as a result of patriarchal oppression. In 2020, we were not able to meet in person, so we came together in this video below. We connect, across oceans and man-made borders, to grieve, to honour, to resist, and to RISE!!! We share this in gratitude and revolutionary love. This is our call to action over these #16Days

 CALL TO ACTION! 25TH NOVEMBER Every Year for the last 15 years MWR have gathered on this day !

 As part of the 16 days of activism, which runs from the International Day to Eliminate Violence against Women  (25th November) to the International Day for Human Rights (10th December), Million Women Rise are calling on women and girls to participate in a global action to demand an end to the continued, systematic violence against us.

During the Covid-19 lockdowns we have seen a sharp rise in violent attacks and subsequent murders of women.  We also know over the last few months, many girls across the world are facing increased levels of harm and marginalisation.

In England alone, the national domestic violence helpline has reported a 700% surge in calls to their service; and to date 88 women have been killed in the UK as a result of men’s violence. Where services exist, they are struggling to cope with the demand.

Join us On 25th November In lifting our collective voices. Million Women Rise is calling on you to take action (if you are able to)

⁃ Join in raising awareness of the scale of abuse that women and girls are being subjected to in your area.

⁃ in your homes or wherever you are,  Write a short message to raise awareness of violence against women and girls, and to demand and end to this injustice. The message could be information / statistics / stories from your locality, along with any one of the following hashtags #16days #endvawg #loudandunited. Our chosen hashtag is #neverforgotten and #whywerise to honour those women and girls who have sadly lost their lives to men’s violence.

⁃ Join the Million Women Rise Vigil.  Many of us will be participating in vigils in our homes,, with family, friends and colleagues. If you are able to, please connect with others or even hold your own moment of silence or Join us Friday 25th Novemeber at 6 - 7pm. Outside Highbury & Islington Station

Your safety is of paramount importance to us, we therefore urge you to take part in any of these actions only if it is safe for you and others to do so.

In 1993, the UN General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Every year since 2009, Million Women Rise has organised a peaceful, all women, vigil on the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 25TH NOVEMBER.

This vigil is in remembrance of women who have been murdered and affected by male violence in the UK and around the world.

It is a sign of resistance to the day-by-day, hour-by-hour, minute-by-minute, systematic violence, threat of violence and oppression inflicted on women worldwide.

Every woman is encouraged to bring a candle and a picture or symbol for woman/women or girl/s they know has been murdered or affected by male violence as a way of honouring and remembering them.

About UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women:

Why we must eliminate violence against women
Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma and shame surrounding it.

In general terms, it manifests itself in physical, sexual and psychological forms, encompassing:

intimate partner violence (battering, psychological abuse, marital rape, femicide);
sexual violence and harassment (rape, forced sexual acts, unwanted sexual advances, child sexual abuse, forced marriage, street harassment, stalking, cyber- harassment);
human trafficking (slavery, sexual exploitation);
female genital mutilation; and
child marriage.

Violence against women and girls is a problem of pandemic proportions.

At least one out of every three women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime – with the abuser usually someone known to her.

Women’s activists have marked 25 November as a day against violence since 1981. The date commemorates the brutal assassination of the three Mirabal sisters, political activists in the Dominican Republic, in 1960 on orders of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961).
