On average 104 women are killed each year in the UK (Office for National Statistics 2016) Compendium – Homicide (average taken over 10 years) by a current or former partner in England and Wales. That means that 2 women a week lose their lives to violence. We must all end our silence and rise up in the memory of these women.
Every year since we began, Million Women Rise has held a vigil 25th November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to honour the women who we have lost through male violence.
This year during the 16 days of activism that starts from the 25th November (IDEVAW) we are inviting you to support our movement and raise money for Million Women Rise. We want you to join us in walking, running, cycling, swimming, trampolining, hopping, shooting hoops..…just moving 104 miles to honour the women that have lost their lives in the past 12 months.
104 miles to end the pandemic that is male violence against women
104 miles to stamp out the oppression that silences women and girls
104 miles that will bring women’s collective voice together to end male violence against women in all its forms.
How can I get involved?
1. You can get involved on any day starting from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day. The 16 Days of Activism is a time to galvanize action to end violence against women and girls around the world.
2. Form a team of 2 or 3 people, or pledge to complete the challenge as an individual! You choose. If you are in a team, then give your team a name! Please put you town or city in brackets.
3. Register your participation by calling or sending a text to 07727419634 and pay the participation fee of £5 (suggested donation per person). Or you can fill out the registration form at the bottom of this page
4. Agree how many miles each team member will walk, run, ride etc.
5. Each team or individual should then seek sponsorship from friends, family, work colleagues and / or whoever else you think will sponsor you.
6. Please post your individual and/or team progress on the Website or on Twitter using our twitter handle @millionwomen and the hashtag #sheroesonthemove on a daily or weekly basis. Let us know how many miles your team have covered, where you are from, who is in your team and why you are taking part. Let’s communicate on-line!
7. Organise and advertise your activities on your social networks and in your communities so other women can join and get involved.
8. We want people to take part but we don’t want people to injure, over exert or hurt themselves, so please seek advice from your GP before undertaking new activities or extending your activity.
9. How would this work? For example, if you join a team of 3 and split the miles evenly, you need to walk about 12, 500 steps each day for 16 days, which is the equivalent of 6.5 miles, to reach your target. You may be in a team of people with differing abilities. For example, Ellie, Aisha and Joy are Team Dynamite (Romford), combine their efforts with Ellie completing a 15 mile bike ride, Aisha does her 5 mile swim, daily swim and Joy starts walking with a 2 mile walk. A total of 22 miles in a day! They are well on their way to completing the challenge.
So whats left to say other than come join us, use the form below to register and lets get moving! You can start right now!
