Press Release via UK Uncut

Seventy activists from feminist groups, Occupy, UK Uncut, Solidarity Federation and Disabled People Against Cuts have today occupied London’s historic Women’s Library in a daring bid to save it from closure.

In a secret action, a small group of women from the specially-formed Reclaim It! group led the take-over of the library in central London at 1.30pm. Within minutes they were joined by a larger crowd of protestors who had been led to the location by the organisers from two meeting points.

3pm ~ 7pm

We will take you on a journey back to tell a little about the other side of history. Her-story will look at how women activists over the years have used art as a tool to campaign for social changes. And how activists have used imaginative means on many levels to flout conventions, to make a stand, to create change.

Women in Black vigil to mark the anniversary of the Tibetan Women’s Uprising, March 12th Our vigil is to mark the anniversary of the Tibetan women’s uprising, and to mark our objection to ongoing gender specific abuses happening in occupied Tibet. Notably, gender specific torture, forced abortions and sterilisations. The vigil will happen on Tuesday March 12th, at the Edith Cavell statue, opposite the entrance to the National Portrait Gallery, between 5pm~6pm

March 12th is the anniversary of the Tibetan Women’s Uprising. On this day in 1959 thousands of women gathered on the ground called Dri-bu-Yul-Khai Thang in front of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. This demonstration – Women’s Uprising Day – in and act of spontaneous non violent resistance to the occupation of Tibet by the Chinese Communist Party.

Chinese authorities responded by resorting to brute force and arrested the leaders of the movement and many other innocent women. They were sentenced to indefinite prison terms, and many of them were mercilessly beaten to death. However, these repressive measures did not dampen the women’s courage. They did not let themselves be cowered by the Chinese.

The events of this day lead to the birth of the Tibetan Women’s Association. A main objective of the Tibetan Women’s Association is to promote awareness at the local and international level of human rights abuses in Tibet. TWA has also initiated projects to address the various social welfare, educational and environmental needs of the exile community.
