Million Women Rise honoured at the Sheila McKechnie awards ceremony
Million Women Rise (MWR) founder Sabrina Qureshi reached the final three nominees for a Sheila McKechnie award in the category of ‘Women Creating Change’.
The ceremony for outstanding campaigners was introduced by veteran news journalist Jon Snow, who praised all finalists for their “fantastic work.”
Prime Minister Gordon Brown, a lifelong friend of the late activist Sheila McKechnie and a patron of the awards given in her honour, sent a message to this year’s nominees: “We celebrate your passion, your creativity and your tireless efforts to build a better society for us all, and I wish you every continuing success.”
The nomination comes after a successful year for MWR, and Sabrina as its founder and international coordinator. An invite to a consultation with cabinet members, including then home secretary Jacqui Smith, in March confirmed the rising profile of the campaign, which has brought together thousands of women since its conception in 2007.
Reading out the finalists in Sabrina’s category, human rights spokesperson and director of Liberty Shami Chakrabarti said of MWR’s aim to end male violence against women: “isn’t that a wonderful thought”.
Category sponsor Rosa UK is the first nationwide women’s fund and a great supporter of MWR’s values. Vivienne Hayes, trustee at Rosa UK, said: “Sabrina is passionate, determined and committed to her goal of improving the lives of vulnerable women; her achievement with Million Women Rise is genuinely inspirational.”
While just missing out on first place, Sabrina was delighted with the opportunity to raise awareness of MWR’s message among some of the most successful and inspirational campaigners in the UK, including ex-hostage and peace negotiator Terry Waite and Friends of the Earth’s Tony Juniper.
The event was held on 16 September in the St-Martins-in-the-Field Church, which stands directly opposite Trafalgar Square – the setting for MWR’s first rally after the coalition brought together over 5,000 women in 2008.
Now an annual event, MWR’s next women-only march will also head towards the famous London landmark on Saturday 6 March, 2010.
